Mayoral reception for Southwark Business Excellence Awards’ winners

The Mayor of Southwark hosted a reception to honour the 2019 winners of the Southwark Business Excellence Awards.

Councillor Sandra Rhule’s party at Southwark Council’s HQ in Tooley Street, brought all the winners together first the first time since they were revealed at June’s Gala Dinner.

The council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs, Business and Innovation, Councillor Stephanie Cryan, spoke about the need for businesses and the local authority to work together.

She said: “We have the resources you need and you have the resources we need. We have a really ambitious schedule. We want to make Southwark a full employment borough, a borough where people can progress within work, a place where people can volunteer around that. We want to create new jobs and new apprenticeships.

“We’ve already created 6,000 jobs and 2,000 apprenticeships and want to go in further with another 5,000 jobs and 2,500 apprenticeships. Without a great relationship with our businesses we just can’t do that, we really can’t. We also know that you need those jobs and apprenticeships to help you succeed. We have that talent pool, those resources and those contacts to help support you within that as well. I very much see my role as somebody who supports and champions our businesses here in Southwark.”

The event on September 12, featured speeches from Sophie Egan, of Origin Coffee Roasters, the 2019 Business of the Year winner; Angela Dalrymple from headline sponsor London South Bank University and Les Johnson, Southwark Chamber of Commerce chairman. The winners, along with the highly commended and commended in each category have been given a year’s free membership from the chamber.
