Businesses are being urged to respond to Transport for London’s consultation on the proposed Bakerloo line extension.
The consultation closes on December 22, and is your opportunity to have your say on the proposals – which even includes the names of new tube stations.
Southwark and Lewisham councils have been campaigning for the Bakerloo line to be extended from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham for more than a year. Their campaign to ‘Back the Bakerloo’ has already won the support of more than 20,000 Londoners. It has included an open letter to the Prime Minister signed by 14 council leaders, mayors and MPs as well as business leaders, asking for his commitment to work with TfL to make this vital project happen.
Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council said: “We believe the extension will make a huge difference to people living and working in Old Kent Road, as well as bringing wider benefits to London. The extension is an essential part of delivering more affordable homes, jobs and services to this part of London and opening up new opportunities for people across the city.”
Southwark Council says the transformational project will help deliver thousands of new affordable homes for all Londoners and will put south east London firmly on the tube map.
From Harrow to Hayes, the extended cross-London route would pass through ten major regeneration areas including Old Oak Common, Elephant and Castle and Old Kent Road. It would deliver an additional 12,000 new homes as part of the Old Kent Road regeneration – bringing the total to 20,000.
More than 100,000 new homes and 100,000 new jobs would be built around new and existing Bakerloo line stations.
It would also support new growth and economic opportunities throughout the capital by increasing public transport capacity and easing congestion elsewhere on the network, including London Bridge and Canada Water.
TfL is proposing two new stations for Old Kent Road but Southwark Council is still pressing for a third at Bricklayers Arms.
